WHAT IT’S LIKE TO RIDE THE 1997 KX500 BEAST 🔥

There’s fast… and then there’s the 1997 KX500. This thing isn’t just a dirt bike—it’s pure chaos on two wheels. Built in an era when engineers didn’t care about “too much power,” the KX500 delivers brutal, arm-stretching acceleration that still scares modern riders.
Let’s talk numbers. The KX500 runs a massive 499cc 2-stroke engine with a bore x stroke of 86.0 mm x 85.0 mm, giving it that legendary torque hit. It pushes out around 60–65 horsepower, with peak power hitting roughly at 6,500–7,000 RPM, but honestly, the powerband feels like it starts the second you twist the throttle—and never really stops.
Transmission-wise, it uses a 5-speed gearbox with wide ratios designed for desert and open terrain. Typical gear ratios look like:
