Is a chunk of carbon slowing you down?
This piece of carbon that had formed inside of a Comer C-51 muffler eventually broke off and created an intermittent power loss issue that is difficult to solve. When the engine isn't running the carbon falls to the bottom of the muffler. When it is running, especially at higher rpm, it gets blown up against the exit holes and becomes a very effective exhaust restrictor. Because this can happen over time, it is a good idea to occasionally remove the muffler and shake it. If there is rattling inside the muffler there most likely is a piece of carbon or multiple pieces inside. I have found the easiest way to get them out is to dip a screw driver into a tub of grease. Place the screw driver into the muffler entrance and gently shake the muffler so that the carbon pieces stick to the grease on the tip of the screw driver. Wipe the grease and carbon off and repeat as needed until it is all removed. In the cooler months I put mufflers in my wood stove to burn out the carbon. In doing that sometimes the chunks break off and don't totally burn up so I remove what is left as described above.
I need to let my customers who have been waiting for their engine work to be finished and have been waiting so long what the hold up is. Eventually I'll get them all finished but unfortunately I have a higher priority right now.
To make a long story short, I have recently been diagnosed with kidney cancer that has spread to my lungs and a couple other places. Other than fatigue, I don't feel bad which is surprising if you saw the MRI results. All of the tests and appointments needed to come up with the best treatment are my highest priority right now. I am confident that my doctors will come up with an effective treatment plan. If I have an engine of yours that you don't want to wait for just call and I'll be happy to send it back. I do plan to work in the shop between my other appointments. It helps to take my mind off of things.
