Standing in a doorway during an earthquake is outdated. Today’s guidance is Drop or Lock, Cover, and Hold On.

Drop to hands/knees.
Lock walker or wheelchair wheels, if possible.

Cover your head/neck under a sturdy table/desk.

Hold on until shaking stops.

If no shelter’s nearby, get low beside an interior wall (away from windows) and cover your head/neck. Don’t run outside during shaking. I recommend practicing this with your family and friends.

I hope you never encounter this scenario, but I want to share helpful tips in case you ever do:

Don’t try to outrun a tornado — as you make your way to the nearest sturdy building for shelter, drive at right angles to its path when it’s safe to do so.

If you’re on the highway, do NOT shelter under an overpass — winds accelerate and debris concentrates there.
