Ahoy me hearties and all ye scurvy scallywags! We lay before ye a fair and gentle parlay and also a shot across the bow, that the lawless rule of the grand ol’ days of piracy on the high seas hath no purchase for frilly landlubbers.

I grant ye, that in the days of piracy we were oft to have royal dispensation and letters of marque for murder and theft of loot and wanton plunder, but time waits for no man and that time hath past.

From stem to stern, all will all be held to account, so belay your mewling and hanging the jib, and mark ye well which side of the meridian of justice ye fall upon, lest ye be keelhauled.

In truth, we now be governed by international laws of land and sea, which in their formation are meant to cleave to reason and righteous justice. From the lowliest deckswab, to the hornswaggling skipjack buckos, to the squiffy financiers, to the murderous brigands that roam the streets, the same laws abide.

Yet again we find ourselves on an all too familiar precipice. On one side is a reasonable expectation of the human capacity towards altruism; the innate understanding that a prosperous society is also a cooperative society, where the rights of all individuals are respected and upheld equally.

The other side of the precipice is the exact opposite; that in order for some of us to “win”, there has to be others of us who have to “lose.” Not unsurprisingly, this leads to the scenario in which we all lose. This is the abyss.

This is not political game theory or psychology, it is the lived experience and earned wisdom of countless generations of humanity that have reached the same conclusion; there is only one way forward, and that is through cooperation and mutual benefit. We all want the same things, and this is not a zero-sum game.

Dr. Martin Luther King deeply understood this primary truth. He was not only concerned with the experiences of his generation, and not just in the context of all those who came before him, but also in consideration of the future generations who will have to inherit what has been left to them.

He understood and saw clearly that the path to prosperity and peace has a trailhead in equality. I quote him here, emphasis is mine:

“I’m convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values…

When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, militarism and economic exploitation are incapable of being conquered.

A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our present policies.”

Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King, not just the man, but the ideals that he upheld, and ultimately was killed for;

Life, Liberty, and Equality.

As Americans, as global citizens, and as human beings, we must continue to fight for and strive to uphold those ideals. Not just for our forbearers or ourselves, but also for every generation to follow us.
