April is Autism Awareness Month!

This month is a time to recognize, understand, and support individuals with autism while celebrating the strengths, uniqueness, and contributions they bring to our schools and community.

At GEO Exceptional Student Services, we are committed to ensuring every student feels valued, supported, and included. We know that students with autism thrive when they are understood, given the right supports, and surrounded by people who believe in their potential.

Families, your role matters. Your advocacy, partnership, and trust make a difference in your child’s journey, and we are proud to work alongside you.

Let’s continue to build awareness, promote acceptance, and create environments where all students can succeed. Together we support, include, and grow.

As we begin LEAP testing, we want our families to know that your child is supported every step of the way. For students receiving exceptional student services, this assessment is an opportunity to show what they know, with the appropriate accommodations and supports already in place through their IEP.

Here’s how you can help at home:
• Make sure your child gets a good night’s rest
• Encourage a calm, positive mindset
• Ensure they arrive at school on time each day
• Remind them to take their time and DO THEIR BEST

As part of our Women’s History Month series, we are recognizing women with disabilities whose leadership and advocacy continue to shape a more inclusive world.

Today, we highlight Imani Barbarin, a disability rights advocate, public speaker, and creator of Crutches and Spice.

Imani Barbarin is known for her work raising awareness about accessibility, ableism, and the intersection of disability and race. Through her platform, she educates communities on the importance of inclusion and challenges systems that create barriers for individuals with disabilities. Her voice influences conversations around disability rights, equity, and representation, helping others better understand the lived experiences of people with disabilities.

This month, we are celebrating women with disabilities who have made history and helped expand opportunities for others. Today, we begin by recognizing our first inspiring leader- Haben Girma.

Haben Girma is the first deafblind graduate of Harvard Law School. She is also an authors, speaker and nationally recognized disability rights advocate. Through her work, she has helped organizations understand the importance of accessible technology and inclusive design so people with disabilities can fully participate in education and the workforce.
