WHY IS IT SO bad to chew ice? 🤔 Because it can do serious damage to our teeth and gums. Why do some people still chew it? It may be a compulsive eating disorder or a craving brought on by iron deficiency anemia. Low iron means low oxygen to the brain, so chewing ice stimulates blood flow to the head. But there are ways to treat the symptoms of iron deficiency that don’t put oral health at risk.
Tooth enamel might be the strongest substance in the body, but it’s also very brittle. Ice is dangerous because it’s cold, not just because it’s hard. 😬 Extreme temperature changes cause tooth enamel to expand and contract, creating tiny cracks and weakening the overall structure. It’s the same thing that happens to pavement in places that get snow.
While weaker enamel can lead to tooth sensitivity and vulnerability to decay, ice also isn’t good for the gums. It’s so cold that it creates a numbing effect, making it difficult to notice if it causes an injury to the gums. It’s also hard enough to break or chip teeth, and it could easily pop a braces bracket loose.

AS KIDS RUN AROUND discovering the world, they tend to get a few bumps and bruises, but hopefully we can help minimize their chances of spoiling their fun by getting a tooth injury.
The majority of tooth injuries for babies and toddlers happen in the bathtub. 🛁 It’s pretty easy to take precautions here; simply add a non-slip bath mat and keep a close eye on them while they’re in the tub.
For older kids, the hazards are on the playground in the form of monkey bars, swings, and jungle gyms, so it’s a good idea to have a conversation with them about using this equipment safely. Likewise, when they’re playing with balls and frisbees, make sure they know not to aim at each other’s heads. 👍
No matter how careful we are, accidents can still happen, which is why it’s good to have an emergency plan. Know where the dentist is so you can get there fast if a tooth (that wasn’t already loose) gets knocked out. In the meantime, store it in the socket (if it will go back in) or in a glass of milk.
Another great way to protect kids’ teeth is to keep them healthy through brushing, flossing, and dentist visits. 😁 Healthy teeth are much tougher!
