Help Kevin Bowen Beat Brain Cancer, organized by Audrey Schmolke 04/21/2023

The last time there was an update on my dad, Kevin Bowen, he had been diagnosed with radiation necrosis as a result of the radiation treatments to treat what was left of the brain cancer cells after surgery. During this point, he was still walking and only experiencing mild cognitive issues like confusing dates and times. Beginning in December of 2022, he began falling frequently and having issues walking on his own. On February 3rd of 2023, he had a seizure that caused him to fall and knock himself out. That fall and seizure placed him in the hospital for 2 days where they monitored his brain activity and came to the conclusion he had been having small/focal seizures for some time now and that most likely was causing the falls. After the seizure on February 3rd, he began to lose more and more cognitive functions and the ability to walk. Currently, he is in a wheelchair and needs help doing everything. He has no muscle or capability to hold himself up. His speech is severely impacted as he has trouble finding the correct words or word association to speak. Due to the multiple seizures he has a week, he has numerous tremors as well. He was admitted to an inpatient facility prior to Easter and stayed for 10 days. He had multiple therapy sessions and doctors evaluating him and his medications. Though he was and is still on an anti-seizure medication, he continues to have seizures weekly and thus the inpatient facility saw no improvement through therapy and sent him back home. The doctors are unsure about what is causing the drastic decline and the seizures, and they have recommended that we call M.D. Anderson or the Mayo Clinic for further help on investigating what could be the cause of this.

Our mom is currently a full-time teacher and that salary alone is sustaining the family. But, my dad can not be left alone during the day and requires 24-7 care. Home health has sent a nurse that comes once a week to check on him and his therapy technicians now come to the house as it is hard for my mom or anyone to load him into a car and bring him to his appointments. What we are looking for are answers and help in finding a service that provides a daytime sitter to help get him up in the morning, get him changed/dressed, and fed until someone can come home to be with him.

Please continue to keep him in your prayers.
