Really enjoyed the this conversation with Jess Cole of for . Got me thinking hard about the differences between northeastern and southeastern trees and how I fit into the industry. Thanks Jess!

World class Live Oak in Arnaudville. What a way to land back in SELouisiana after a couple months working in NYC. Looks like this root structure was the result of scores (or hundreds?!) of years of stream bank erosion. Soooo cool to get directly under a tree and see the very heart where an acorn would have germinated and sent out its baby tap root way back when.

Don’t let the cold snap fool you, spring has sprung in Baton Rouge. Eastern Red Bud is one of the fist to pop. It can push flowers directly from its stems and trunk, a trait known as cauliflory. It’s native from the East Coast to Texas and from Mexico to Michigan, where it’s nectar and seeds feed a range of birds, bees and butterflies. If you’re looking for a small, gorgeous, native, ornamental, this is a great pick. They’re prone to poor branch unions but that is easily corrected with early pruning. P.s. they’re in the Legume family!
