Many Veterans assume that without direct combat experience, a PTSD claim is automatically weaker or disqualified.
That is not accurate.
Under π―π΄ πππ₯ π―.π―π¬π°(π³), the VA recognizes multiple PTSD stressor categories, including:
β
Combat stressors
β
Fear of hostile military or terrorist activity
β
Non-combat stressors such as accidents, traumatic events, or military sexual trauma (MST)
The difference is not whether the claim βcounts.β The difference is the level of evidence required to support it.
Non-combat PTSD claims often require stronger documentation, such as:
π Service records
π Buddy statements
π Medical evidence
π Behavioral markers related to the event
VA Form 21-0781 also plays an important role in documenting and verifying the stressor.
Understanding how PTSD claims are evaluated can help Veterans better understand available pathways and documentation standards.
