Many Veterans assume that without direct combat experience, a PTSD claim is automatically weaker or disqualified.

That is not accurate.

Under 𝟯𝟴 𝗖𝗙π—₯ 𝟯.𝟯𝟬𝟰(𝗳), the VA recognizes multiple PTSD stressor categories, including:
βœ… Combat stressors
βœ… Fear of hostile military or terrorist activity
βœ… Non-combat stressors such as accidents, traumatic events, or military sexual trauma (MST)

The difference is not whether the claim β€œcounts.” The difference is the level of evidence required to support it.

Non-combat PTSD claims often require stronger documentation, such as:
πŸ“Œ Service records
πŸ“Œ Buddy statements
πŸ“Œ Medical evidence
πŸ“Œ Behavioral markers related to the event

VA Form 21-0781 also plays an important role in documenting and verifying the stressor.

Understanding how PTSD claims are evaluated can help Veterans better understand available pathways and documentation standards.
