In late June of last year, a group of 11 Pingry faculty and staff members embarked on a journey to Georgia and Alabama to explore African-American history in the United States. They began in Atlanta, where they visited The King Center and paid their respects at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King's gravesites. The exploration continued at the Madam CJ Walker Museum and the Apex Museum.
Next, they traveled to Montgomery, Alabama, where they visited The Legacy Museum, which “offers a powerful, immersive journey through America’s history of racial injustice.” Their visit in Montgomery also included stops at The Freedom Monument Sculpture Park and The National Memorial for Peace and Justice.
The final leg of their trip took them to Birmingham, Alabama, where they toured the historic 16th Street Baptist Church. They were honored to meet Dr. Carolyn McKinstry, a survivor of the 1963 church bombing, who led them on a personal tour of Kelly Ingram Park and shared her story.
