Before meeting the seller: get the IMEI number and check it at checkcoverage.apple.com and a free blacklist checker — this confirms carrier lock status and whether it's reported stolen. When you have the phone: check for Activation Lock by starting setup — if it asks for someone else's Apple ID you cannot use it. Check Battery Health (Settings → Battery → Battery Health) — below 80% means immediate replacement cost. Test touch response in every corner. Look for dark spots, discoloration, or lines in the display. Confirm the IMEI on the phone matches what you were given. Test cameras, charging, and all buttons. Still unsure? Turn off Background App Refresh for apps that don't need it. Audit location services: anything set to "Always" is running GPS constantly. Reduce screen brightness — it's the single biggest battery consumer. Use Wi-Fi instead of cellular when possible — cellular radio uses significantly more power, especially with weak signal. If you implement all of this and the battery still can't get through the day, the battery itself is degraded. On iPhone, Settings → Battery → Battery Health below 80% is the threshold.
