It all began right here on Baltimore soil.

On February 28, 1827, the city’s merchants chartered the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad – the first common-carrier railroad in the United States. They were determined to compete with New York City and Washington, DC, who were using canals to bring goods to American interior. Baltimore had no waterways leading West, so the city’s businessmen turned to an experimental technology from the United Kingdom.

The First Stone of the B&O Railroad was laid on July 4, 1828. The ceremonial stone was placed by Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence, and one of the wealthiest men in America at the time. Carroll was a major supporter of the B&O, becoming the railroad’s first stockholder.

Today, that First Stone rests here at the National Museum of Railroad History & Innovation. A reminder that every journey starts somewhere, and every great innovation is built on those who dared to imagine what came next.
