For Earth Day, we’re highlighting two organizations doing incredible work in our communities - and helping us to reduce our waste in the process! ☕️♻️
THE 6TH BRANCH
As stewards of more than 20 acres of green space in the disinvested neighborhoods of East Baltimore, it’s an understatement to say The 6th Branch stays busy all year long. This veteran-led organization envisions a Baltimore where all residents thrive in healthy, environmentally-sustainable and resilient neighborhoods, and they’re putting in the work to make that a reality. 💪
DID YOU KNOW...your morning cup of coffee from Black Acres is contributing to better soil quality for local community farms? ☕️✨ That’s right - members of The 6th Branch collect the used coffee grounds and filters from our cafe each week and integrate them into the compost program at their Greenmount Compost Factory, keeping hundreds of pounds of waste out of landfills.
And they do way more than compost. You can find all around the city, leading volunteer projects to improve community spaces, running year-round markets to share their farm harvest at no cost to neighbors, providing urban canopy work to transform vacant lots, and even tending to the local bees that reside on site. 🐝

OW CAFE HOURS CHANGE
A quick heads up for our Open Works community:
We’ve updated hours for our cafe and will be open for Monday-Friday service only, effective immediately. Weekday window and inside hours will remain the same.
While we’re bummed we won’t see you all on Saturdays (at least in the short-term), we’re excited that this change will allow for dedicated members of our team to grow into new roles within the business, while maintaining a predictable and balanced work schedule for all staff. 🫶

✨ Sales of this year’s Black History Month Blend support Whitelock Community Farm (), a Black-led urban farm in Baltimore’s Reservoir Hill neighborhood that has transformed vacant land into a working farm: growing food, training community stewards, and keeping fresh produce flowing freely to neighbors at no cost.
✨ BHM Blend is currently featured on pour over at both cafe locations and available whole bean or ground to order in cafe and through our online shop at blackacrescoffee.com

WHITELOCK COMMUNITY FARM
“Whitelock Community Farm is a Black-led green space dedicated to cultivating food and empowering our community. We aim to advance social equity in our neighborhood by providing educational opportunities, building skills, and nurturing leadership. Our mission is to increase access to healthy and affordable food for underserved and marginalized communities, with all produce grown at the farm freely shared with the community as an act of food justice, while creating spaces for positive community engagement and inspiring meaningful conversations about food access, intergenerational neighborhood growth, and environmental justice.”
✨ We’re excited to share more about the history, mission and impact of Whitelock Community Farm over the coming weeks. In the meantime, head to whitelockfarm.org to learn more about how you can get involved and support their work.
