It seems disastrous Hurricanes coinciding with back-to-school season may be the new normal. New Orleans taught us lessons that cities might survive the hurricane but be devastated by a storm surge of educational opportunist. Great video on a huge misconception about common core math. Full disclosure: As a parent I hated my kids experience with this! But it wasn't common core's fault. I hated it because it was an entirely new way of thinking about math taught by a teacher who wasn't equipped with a correspondingly new way of teaching and assessing mathematical ability. So much of changing the way our schools work is a teacher education problem. More on that tomorrow...
