You Don’t Have to Wear the Uniform to Help Honor One Who Did 🇺🇸🎺

“I never served… can I still volunteer?”
It’s one of the questions we hear more than almost any other.
And our answer is always the same:
Absolutely.

Every military funeral is a moment of profound gratitude. While the veteran being honored wore the uniform, the people who gather to say goodbye often represent an entire grateful nation.

That includes volunteers.

Throughout American history, communities have come together to honor those who served. Neighbors, friends, musicians, church members, students, and families have stood alongside military honor guards—not because they served in uniform, but because they understood the importance of remembrance.

That tradition continues today.

At Taps for Veterans, many of our volunteer buglers are veterans. Many are not. Some are professional musicians. Others are high school or college students, community band members, retired music teachers, church musicians, or simply people who believe that every veteran deserves the dignity of hearing live Taps at their final farewell.

What unites them isn’t a military record. It’s a servant’s heart.

Every time a volunteer raises a bugle and sounds those 24 notes, they become part of something far greater than themselves. They help fulfill one final promise to someone who once answered the call to serve.

You simply need the willingness to honor those who did.

What if there was no one to stand at your final farewell?

Yesterday at Massachusetts National Cemetery, something extraordinary happened.

A community came together to ensure that would never be the final chapter for ten American veterans.

During a special Unaccompanied Memorial Service, we honored men who faithfully served our nation and were laid to rest with full military honors, even though no family members were able to be present at their funerals.

But yesterday, they were not alone.
The people of Cape Cod became their family.

As the U.S. Army Honor Guard and Rifle Team rendered military honors, the Patriot Guard Riders, Inc. stood watch, Gold Star Families gathered in remembrance, and cemetery staff welcomed all with quiet dignity. Taps for Veterans was deeply honored to participate as U.S. Marine veteran Mark Paradis sounded the 24 notes of Taps—America’s National Song of Remembrance.

Those 24 notes have echoed across battlefields and cemeteries for more than 160 years. They remind us that while a life of service may come to an end, our gratitude never should.

Not simply to play music.

But to ensure that every veteran receives the dignity, honor, and respect of a live sounding of Taps—because every life of service deserves one final tribute from a grateful nation.

To the Patriot Guard Riders, the U.S. Army Honor Guard and Rifle Team, Gold Star Families, the dedicated staff of Massachusetts National Cemetery, and every citizen who attended, thank you for proving that remembrance is a responsibility we all share.

May we never allow a veteran’s service to fade into silence.

228 Years of Honor Through Music 🇺🇸🎺

🇺🇸 Before there was a national anthem at every ceremony… there was a Marine band reminding a young nation who it was. 🎺

—July 11, 1798—President John Adams signed an Act of Congress establishing “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band.

Today, 228 years later, it remains not only the oldest military band in the United States, but also the nation’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization.

Think about that for a moment.

For more than two centuries, generations of Marine musicians have stood at moments that shaped American history. They have performed for presidents, welcomed world leaders, honored heroes, comforted grieving families, and reminded us that music has always been woven into the fabric of military service.

The band’s first members—32 drummers and fifers—served wherever they were needed. Some deployed aboard ships. Others supported Marine posts across the young republic. Still others remained near our nation’s leaders, providing the music that inspired a growing country.

Their mission wasn’t simply entertainment. It was service.

🎺 This Is Why… music has always mattered in the military.

Every bugle call, every hymn, every march, and every note of Taps carries a purpose beyond melody. Music steadies hearts before battle, celebrates victory, and offers comfort when words can no longer be found.

At Taps for Veterans, we carry forward that same tradition every time one of our volunteer buglers sounds the 24 notes of Taps at a veteran’s final farewell.

Because those notes are more than music.
They are gratitude made audible.
They are one final salute from a grateful nation.
