Last week, we kicked off our summer program Curate Now!: Youth Voices in Art + Archives- a paid high school opportunity for students to gain curatorial experience through a 7-week intensive involving site visits, writing workshops, and career exploration. Today, students visited the Billie Holiday Center for Liberation Arts located at Johns Hopkins University, where students met archivists Tonika Berkley and Xavier Walker, who allowed our youth curators to explore their collection, learn about archiving, and view Jeneanne Collins’ site-specific installation titled “Community Legacies, Humanity Remains: Intersections, Crosswalks, & Pathways”. All objects and photos pictured are courtesy of Sheridan Libraries, JHU. This program is made possible through the MSDE’s Public School Enhancement Grant Program and the Thomas Wilson Foundation.

This past Sunday, students from this year’s Baltimore Youth Arts Advocacy Council (BYAAC) cohort hosted an inspiring Youth Art Market at Baltimore Unity Hall. Entirely conceived, planned, and led by students, the event showcased the creativity, leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit of Baltimore’s youth. From coordinating logistics and outreach to participating as vendors themselves, students worked collaboratively to bring the market to life.

The event featured 17 youth art vendors representing 8 Baltimore City Public Schools, all displaying and selling original artwork, including prints, clothing, paintings, handmade jewelry, bath and body products, illustrations, crochet pieces, and more. The market also included an Open Mic where teens shared original music and spoken word performances, creating a vibrant celebration of youth voice, creativity, and community.

This was the last event of the school year for this year’s BYAAC cohort. We are so proud of all they accomplished this year and wish them a wonderful summer break and beyond!
