Here's a skill I wish more homeowners had before they hired someone: how to look at a finished kitchen and tell whether a designer was involved.

It's not about whether it's beautiful. A contractor-only kitchen can be gorgeous. It's about whether it's been designed for how someone actually lives.

The signs are small. The cabinet scribe where it meets the wall — flush and tight, or is there a trim piece covering a gap? The refrigerator placement — does the door open fully? The pull-out organization next to the stove — is it there, or did it get cut from the budget? The sink area — is there a real home for cleaning supplies, or does everything just sit on the counter?

These aren't catastrophic failures. They don't show up in a listing photo. But you notice them every single day when you're living in the space.

The reason they happen isn't bad contractors. It's a missing design phase. Someone who wasn't just thinking about what goes where, but about how you move through that space, what your hands are doing, what gets used at 7am when you're half asleep and trying to make coffee before work.

This is what design-first actually means. And this is where the regret either gets prevented — or set in motion.
