We are rolling on the 1300 block of Homewood Avenue! Since our last update, we have made amazing progress in rebuilding the 4 abandoned houses on this block.
✅ HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Rough-Ins
✅ Insulation and Drywall
✅ Trim and Doors
✅ Tile, Cabinets, Counters, and Vanities
✅ Rear Stucco, Concrete Work, Decks, and Fencing

We are just a couple months away from fully restoring these blighted properties into new homes, which means more new homeownership opportunities are coming to Johnston Square.

East Baltimore’s rebirth continues! House by house. Block by block. Community-driven. No displacement.

“I had to weigh how I felt about living next to a vacant…I said that I would invest in my property, and I was confident that with the developers that are working in the area like ReBUILD, it wouldn’t be long before there would be a neighbor joining me.”

Meredith’s confidence is at the heart of “whole blocks” community revitalization. 15 years ago, when over 40% of houses in this area of Oliver and Broadway East were abandoned, buying a home here was a true financial risk, and a safety risk too—one that few people were willing to take. Now that we’ve rebuilt over 200 homes in this area and driven its vacancy rate below 3%, people can buy here with confidence that their home is a good investment—and that they will be happy about living in the community.

We are working to bring that number down to 0%.

1307 North Broadway was one of the last abandoned houses in the area, but now we’ve rebuilt it into a beautiful new home. Like Meredith, we feel so confident that her future neighbor will love owning this home—and living in this growing community of opportunity FOR ALL.

Special thanks to C.L. McCoy Framing Co., our general contractor at 1307 North Broadway, for rebuilding it into such a pristine home, and for being so considerate of the surrounding neighbors during the construction process.

The rehab of this rowhouse on the 1000 block of East Biddle will come with a major challenge — a massive tree growing through the center of the home! Before we rebuild, our team will have to carefully remove the tree, which has also extended over a neighboring homeowner’s roof. Protecting surrounding properties and preparing the site safely is a vital first step in the revitalization process.

We’ll be starting redevelopment of the abandoned houses on this block later this year. Stay tuned for when we begin transforming this property from blight to a brand-new home. 🔨

🎥 From the Archives: A 20-Year Milestone Worth Celebrating

As ReBUILD Metro celebrate 20 years of impact—revitalizing more than 600 homes and eliminating over 1,000 blighted properties—we’re looking back at where it all began.

In this WBAL-TV 11 NEWS story from two decades ago, we were just getting started, but the vision, passion, and commitment shown then continue to shape our work today.
The challenges were severe—but the belief in community transformation was stronger.

That same vision still drives us forward:
• Revitalizing communities
• Creating opportunity
• Redevelopment without displacement
Take a look at how it started. It’s incredible to think about how far we’ve come by working together—year by year and block by block.
