In the current “All Blues” issue of Hand Papermaking magazine, Don Farnsworth and Max Thill describe their pursuit to recreate Renaissance-era blue handmade paper, cherished by artists like Federico Barocci and Leonardo da Vinci. At Magnolia Paper Studio, for the past ten years, Don and Max have explored numerous ways to color rags and pulp for papermaking, and went so far as to commission the production of heritage wool felts to achieve the hair-marked surface of sixteenth-century blue handmade papers. Their own artwork on the blue papers they made are a testament to their decade-long quest for the perfect drawing paper. Here, Max Thill is forming sheets of indigo-blue linen paper at Magnolia Paper Studio, Oakland, California.
