That sudden squinting from the front row usually means I need to adjust my positioning. Performing an outdoor set in rural Harford County brings a set of variables you just don't find in a controlled indoor venue.

I recently dealt with a setup where the low sun was hitting the deck at an angle that made it impossible for the kids to see the fine hand movements.

When I'm working an outdoor event, I have to account for:

• Harsh direct sunlight washing out visual details
• Uneven grass causing slight vibrations during close-up work
• Changing light patterns shifting every few minutes
• Wind affecting the way props are handled

It requires a bit of tactical maneuvering to ensure the magic actually lands. I've found that finding the right shadow pocket is just as important as the sleight of hand itself.
