“WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 20 YEARS?!”

I was asked this question about a week ago and I froze. 🥶

Not because I couldn’t think of something to say, but because I realized in that moment that I was never taught to think that far ahead. If I’m honest with myself, I DIDIN’T EVEN THINK I WAS ALLOWED to DREAM.

I know that sounds werid, but let me explain...

At 29, I’m realizing that the bar I accepted for myself was entirely TOO LOW. As a black man in America, I’ve already surpassed all societal expectancies:

I’m alive past 25. I’m not incarcerated or involved in crime. I hold 2 higher degrees. 🙏🏾

From a purely statistical standpoint I’m doing well. However, this bar set by figures of authority in my life is entirely based on a negative outlook.

It wasn’t until I was asked to years into the future that I realized I was looking at my life through a crooked lens.

So to answer the question, WITHOUT HOLDING BACK...

20 years from now...

I WILL be a successful business man. I WILL have at least 5 beautiful children (both biologically and adopted). I WILL be living sustainably on my my own land in Hawaii! I WILL be teaching the gospel through performing arts a digital media. I WILL have the power and influence to give back to my community and bless my family. I WILL be debt free! I WILL own a media company with my brother that produces countless opportunities for POC to DREAM and share their truth. I WILL be living in my purpose, doing all I can to make this world a better place. ✊🏾

Alexx and I grew up in two completely different worlds. Our differences in upbringing directly impact our relationship. Our family, for better and for worse, have made us who we are today.

As my wife and I pick and choose which traditions to keep and what bad habits drop, I find myself contemplating the idea of “legacy”.

What do I want to leave behind?

When I think about this question, the word “stewardship” comes to mind. This is a concept, among others, that my parents worked very hard to impart. A concept that informs every decision I make from day to day.

I want to leave this planet in a BETTER state than when I first entered it.

I truly believe it’s our responsibility as humans to be good stewards of this planet. To see the air, land, sea, and all of its inhabitants (us included) as something to care for.

In the US alone, 29 BILLION BOTTLES are thrown away every single year. Everyone KNOWS plastic waste is harmful for the environment. They just don’t know what the solution is.

I’m proud to be apart of a movement that is committed to that solution. A business that exists to make this world a better place not just for us now, but for our tomorrow people as well!
