Aztec Police Department

Today, an APD officer witnessed a male subject in the wash near FedEx, firing a rifle within the city limits. The subject was discharging the weapon in the general direction of S. Main Avenue, a civilian working in the wash on a machine, and the officer who was conducting a traffic stop nearby. At this time, the individual's intentions remain under investigation, and it is not certain what or who he was shooting at yet.
Fortunately, no one was injured and no one was struck by gunfire.
The suspect fled the area, prompting a coordinated search by the Aztec Police Department (APD) with assistance from the San Juan County Sheriff's Office (SJCSO) and the Bloomfield Police Department (BPD). We greatly appreciate the assistance of our local law enforcement partners, and the FBI who generously offered assistance as well.
A male was ultimately located outside close to a nearby residence, where he barricaded himself inside of after fleeing from officers. Following law enforcement efforts, the subject was taken into custody without further incident.
As with all criminal investigations, all subjects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
