The Gospel of John – Part 15
A New Life Not a New System
In John 2, Jesus knew what was in man. In John 3, He speaks to Nicodemus and reveals the answer to what is in man.
Religion may improve outward appearances. Commitment may restrain certain behaviors. Discipline may change certain habits. But only the Spirit of God can give new life.
Jesus did not come merely to clean up the old man; He came to give man new life.
That is why Jesus did not say, “Try harder.” He said, “Ye must be born again.”

Last Sunday in The Gospel of John – Part 9, we looked at Simon Peter from John 1:40–42.
When Jesus first met Simon, He already knew exactly who he was. He knew his fears, his impulses, his weakness, and his failures. Yet Jesus still gave him a new name and spoke to what grace would make him.
Simon was the man who listened and reacted.
Peter was the man Christ was shaping.
And in between, we see a life in progress.
Peter’s story reminds us that God does not save us and then leave us to figure ourselves out. The same grace that saves us is the grace that keeps working on us. Even after Peter failed, heaven still remembered him by name.
If you have ever felt like you are still struggling, still learning, still falling short, Peter’s life is a reminder that God is not finished with you.
Jesus knew exactly what Simon was, and still spoke to what Peter would become.
