Most owners want their dogs to like people and other dogs, and they believe that if their dogs interact with enough people and other dogs, they will become more comfortable.

But this can create pushy, overstimulated dogs rather than well-socialized ones. It conditions dogs to associate people and other dogs with high excitement and arousal, and to expect that every dog or person they encounter will interact with them.

If calm, relaxed neutrality around dogs and people is the goal:
1) Teach your dog to be truly calm, relaxed, and neutral around other dogs and people, then
2) Have your dog simply ignore them during the walk.

Train your dog FOR the moments, not IN the moments.
