Research Highlight: HbA1c, Diabetes, and Cognitive Decline🧠🧐

This long-term study looked at the association between HbA1c levels, diabetes status, and cognitive decline over a period of 10-years in 5,189 participants.

HbA1c is a reflection of average blood glucose levels over the past 2-3 months and is used in diagnosing diabetes and prediabetes. Cognitive decline is a slow progression that takes place over many years, often leading to dementia. Identifying risk factors and associations early on in life could play a major role in taking preventive and precautionary measures.

The study found that despite no initial association between blood sugar and cognitive decline at baseline, by the end of the 10-year follow up, diabetes was associated with subsequent cognitive decline. In addition, they found a linear correlation between HbA1c levels with cognitive decline, regardless of diabetic status. In other words, increasing HbA1c was associated with worse cognitive outcomes. Even after controlling for the other variables commonly associated with diabetes that could also be contributing to cognitive decline, diabetes remained an independent risk factor.

This study highlights the importance of maintaining glucose control and healthy glucose levels as we age as a potential means of identifying and possibly preventing the cognitive decline that precedes dementia.
