Austin Pets Alive!

1PM Update: Our hearts fell this morning, waking into worsened conditions and news of the Kerrville and Kendall county areas flooding as well. The rising waters have significantly impacted local infrastructure, with many rural roads and bridges currently submerged. This has created a critical challenge for our rescue teams trying to reach pets. We’re not sure what lies before us today, but we know that people and pets need us to try.

The three team members that went to the Hondo/Uvalde area last night are working to determine how we can get to animals flooded in the Uvalde area who need our help. They've created a flyer with a QR code that offers a form to report lost, missing or pets left behind so they can be reunited with their families. Our teams are deploying more transport vans, medical staff, and emergency supplies to evacuate shelter pets to safety, creating critical space for emergency response.

As of 1:00PM today our rescue efforts include taking 47 dogs and 30 cats from Kendall County and 25 cats from Boerne Animal Care Services. Additionally, we’re in contact with Kerrville Pets Alive who called for assistance, too.

Foster:
This is our most urgent need. We need to move animals into safe, temporary homes to make room for flood victims. If you can foster a dog or cat for at least one week—or until adoption—you are literally saving a life.

Please come to our 1156 W. Cesar Chavez St. location between 12–6pm to be matched with a pet.

Volunteer:
We need help with transport, intake, laundry, cleaning, and sorting supplies.

We’ve officially begun our emergency intake from Castroville. Our team is working to ensure these pets are safe, warm, and cared for after their community was impacted by catastrophic flooding.

We are coordinating directly with shelters in the disaster zones to take in animals surrendered before the flooding to ensure they have space for the displaced pets coming in. We are committed to ensuring these pets are safe, warm, and cared for, and we are working hard to provide them with the support they need during this difficult time. By clearing these shelters now, we are ensuring every animal has a path to safety.

The need is immediate, and we have a long road ahead. To make space for the influx of animals affected by these storms in Uvalde, Castroville, and beyond, we need the Austin community to step up today.
