Today, after leaving my chocolate shop exhausted and hurting, I came across a story about a young man becoming functionally cured of sickle cell disease through gene therapy.
As a chocolatier living with sickle cell anemia, this hit me differently.
Chocolate work is beautiful, but it’s also incredibly physical. Long hours on my feet, lifting, tempering, cleaning, creating—often while managing pain that most people never see. I love this craft deeply, and I have remained loyal to it even on the hardest days.
For so long, sickle cell has been something I’ve learned to work around. Today, for the first time in a while, I found myself wondering what it would feel like to work without that burden.
I’m not celebrating a cure for myself today. I’m celebrating hope.
Hope for the sickle cell community. Hope for future generations. Hope that one day people living with this disease won’t have to choose between their dreams and their health.
And tonight, that hope feels pretty sweet. ❤️🍫
