Juneteenth is a reminder that freedom delayed is freedom denied. June 19 marks the day many enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned they were free— more than two years after emancipation had already been declared. It is both a celebration of resilience and a moment to reflect on the unfinished work of justice.

As Indian Americans and immigrants, this history is not separate from our own American story. The rights, opportunities, and sense of belonging that many of us experience today were shaped by generations of people who challenged inequality and expanded the promise of this nation.

The African American struggle for civil rights helped redefine what inclusion, dignity, and equal opportunity mean in America, opening doors for countless communities that followed. Remembering this history isn’t just about looking back—it’s about understanding our responsibility to one another today.
