My 8 year old student Aaron is doing really well on Message in a Bottle by the Police. He started on classical and because he can play Capricho Árabé he can make those 9th stretches on Andy Summers guitar part. While classical guitar is in my mind the best vehicle for technical and musical development, playing pop music is just as essential because it teaches maintaining the groove and keeping track of the arrangement and developing feel.

So my longest standing student Benjamin and I have been working on Midnight Tango by Al Di’Meola. We did a run through with a backing track courtesy of Michael Ryan in lieu of doing it with a full band. He will be going off to college in August so I want to do something cool before he goes. He had really come a long way. Check it out!
