The Yemeni human-rights defender is the founder of Mwatana Organization For Human Rights, The first individual to brief the U.N. on the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, Winner of the Roger N. Baldwin Medal of Liberty award, and was selected as one of TIME magazine’s 2019 most influential people in the world. Radhya Al-Mutawakel embodies the role of a human rights defender painstakingly speaking truth to power despite creating a great personal risk. It is only through Radhya’s efforts that the rest of the world is able to witness the atrocities going on in Yemen. Her organization has been using “field investigations and research to produce accurate and objective accounts of the facts regarding its mission in order to detect and stop human rights violations. Currently, Radhya and her team are documenting cases of violations of human rights by all parties participating in the Yemen conflict including the United States, the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthi forces. Radhya Al-Mutawakel is a true example of the courage it takes to stand against injustice and to fight for a platform for the innocent victims in the Yemen crisis. Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders also writes of his admiration of Radhya and the “clarity she brought to a conflict that too few have noticed.”
