🌞 Texas heat is no joke—and it can become dangerous for our pets faster than many people realize. 🐾

Heat-related illness isn't just something that happens after a long hike or being left in a hot car. Even a short walk, playing in the backyard, or spending time outside on a humid day can put pets at risk.

🚩 Watch for these warning signs:
• Excessive or frantic panting
• Thick or excessive drooling
• Bright red or very pale gums
• Weakness or stumbling
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Acting unusually tired or unwilling to move
• Confusion or disorientation
• Collapse or seizures

💙 What should you do?
If you notice early signs, move your pet to a cool, shaded or air-conditioned area immediately. Offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water, and use cool, wet towels on their belly, paws, and neck while avoiding ice baths, which can make things worse.

📞 Contact your veterinarian right away

Heat stroke is a true medical emergency. Even if your pet seems to recover after cooling down, internal damage can continue, so they should still be examined by a veterinarian.

🐶🐱 The best prevention? Walk during the cooler parts of the day, always provide fresh water and shade, avoid hot pavement, and when in doubt, keep outdoor time short.

We'll be closed on Saturday, July 4th to celebrate Independence Day.

🐾 If your pet needs medication, please send in refill requests by Wednesday so we have plenty of time to get everything ready before the holiday.

💊 Medication pickups, appointment scheduling and sample drop off will resume on Monday. We'll be back to seeing patients for appointments on Tuesday.

🎆 Fireworks don't have to be scary. 🐾

For many pets, fireworks can be overwhelming. The good news? With time, patience, and the right approach, you can help change how they feel about those loud booms.

Counterconditioning works by pairing the sound of fireworks with something your pet loves, like tasty treats, playtime, or their favorite toy. Over time, those scary noises can start to predict good things instead of something to fear.

Remember:
🐾 Start at a volume your pet is comfortable with.
🐾 Keep sessions short and positive.
🐾 Move at your pet's pace.
🐾 If they're showing signs of fear, take a step back and slow down.

Every pet learns differently, and that's okay. Small wins add up!

When she's not at the clinic, you can find her gardening, crocheting, searching for great food (especially sushi!), or spending time with her adorable Shar-Pei, Wallace. She's also a fan of crime podcasts, rock music, and cheering on the Spurs.

We’ve received a few questions about New World Screwworm following recent reports in Texas. There has been one confirmed case in a domestic animal in the state.

For most of our patients—especially indoor pets—the risk remains very low. We are sharing this information to keep our clients informed and help answer any questions.
