Dry Standard vs. Dry Goal: Understanding Mitigation Endpoints
In water damage restoration, you can’t just “dry until it looks dry.” You need measurable targets to know when a material is truly dry—and safe from mold growth, structural damage, or warranty issues. That’s where Dry Standard and Dry Goal come in.
Dry Standard: The Baseline
The normal, moisture-equilibrium reading for a given material in that specific building and climate.
Determined by testing unaffected areas of the same material type (wood, drywall, concrete, etc.).
Serves as your reference point for what “dry” means on this job.
Dry Goal: The Target
The moisture content you aim for during drying—usually at or slightly above the dry standard.
Set to ensure materials are safe and won’t support microbial growth after equipment removal.
May adjust based on environmental conditions, material type, and insurer/IICRC requirements.
How They Work Together
Establish Dry Standard → Test unaffected materials and record readings.
Set Dry Goal → Match or slightly exceed dry standard while factoring in real-world drying limitations.
Monitor Daily → Use the same meter type and method each day for consistency.
Document Progress → Create a clear record for insurers and compliance checks.
Common Mistakes
Guessing based on “feel” or visual appearance.
Not accounting for different materials—wood vs. drywall vs. concrete have very different standards.
Using other jobs’ numbers instead of measuring the actual structure you’re drying.
Removing equipment early because it “looks dry,” risking mold growth later.
Best Practices
Always moisture map both wet and unaffected areas at the start.
Use manufacturer specs and IICRC S500 guidelines when available.
Re-test unaffected areas if weather changes significantly during drying.
