Touring the US Fall 2026:
What does it mean to be ‘Mad’ with devotion?
Step into the world of Janabai and Lal Ded—two mystic poets who defied the constraints of their time to surrender fully to the Divine.
Janabai (13th Century): The Marathi poet-saint of the Warkari tradition who found God in the form of Vitthala.
Lal Ded (14th Century): The Kashmiri Shaivaite yogini who sought the Divine in the formless absolute.
Though their paths diverged—one through the heart of devotion, the other through the intensity of tantra—both women transformed their personal hardships into a legacy of spiritual liberation.
Experience this duality brought to life through the exquisite choreography of Rama Vaidyanathan, performed by Rama and Sannidhi Vaidyanathan.
Choreography: RAMA VAIDYANATHAN
Music for Janabai: Sudha Raghuraman
Music for Lalded: Dr. S. Vasudevan
Rhythmic Composition: K. Sivakumar
Commissioned by the Mad and Divine Festival, curated by Anita Ratnam.

Love is ♥️
She spoke her truth. Her existence was hidden behind closed doors and muffled screams. Being born a woman was all that she had done wrong...
But when she spoke, centuries old strongholds of privilege fell, the powerbrokers of her time were expelled from society, the king almost abdicated...
Her words were sharp and to the point. She had meticulous records of everything she spoke. It was hard to prove her wrong. She had endured so much ugliness that even today her name is not uttered amongst her people. But because of what she had gone through, and because of the circumstances that led her to speak precisely and deliberately about her unimaginable sufferings that began at the age of 9; we the women of Kerala, have much to be grateful for towards her. Today, even though we are from a state that prides itself for its high rates of education and women's empowerment, we still need to cling on to stories like those of our foremothers and daughters of the soil who have given up and lost everything to liberate us, least that we forget the wars they fought for us. We have to continue to be vigilant about the dangers of silencing women's voices. We have to make sure that another Thatri will not suffer in the darkness of greed, lust and power... that our children should forever be safe and happy and protected by those around them... that we have the courage to speak up and act when we have to... that we are aware of our dark pasts and that we learn to acknowledge it and promise forever that another child should not have to live in fear...
