Happy Father's Day to Charles Barber Dicks III. My dad. My namesake.
Big smile. Big heart. Everybody liked him.
He grew up in New Orleans and never lost that spirit: love people, enjoy life, make everyone around you feel at home. Half my friends growing up basically considered him their dad too.
When my mom was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, my brother Robert and I were about 10 or 11. My dad didn't flinch. He stopped working and took care of her himself, because she never wanted to go into a facility. He just did it. And he made sure Robert and I still felt loved and secure through all of it, even when he was carrying a lot himself.
Years later, when he started declining and needed care, I was a busy young professional with a young family. I was overwhelmed, stressed, sad watching him go so fast, and I had no idea where to start. Downsize the house. Find the right place. Coordinate the move. I did it all alone. I didn't even know services like ours existed.
Now I run that service. And I think about him every time we show up for a family going through exactly what I went through.
I carry his name. I'm trying to carry his example too.
Miss you, Dad. Robert and I love you.
