Devotional Mexican Tin Nichos 11/21/2010

These devotional pieces of Mexican Folk art were made in the later part of the 1800's until the 40's and 50's. This nichos were used in Mexican home alters for devotional purposes. These tin nichos typically frame a religious painting or lithograph.

Some of these frames have soldered attachments on their top or sides in the shape of roundels, rosettes, scallops, etc. Others have painted glass or reverse-painted glass. The prints that are set in these frames are usually pictures of Jesus or of popular advocations of the Virgin from local churches.
