Cosplay in America

I keep thinking that there should be a con yearbook.

Some cons have staff photographer document panels, guests, cosplayer meet-ups and sometimes you'll see the con would post them on their FB page and no you probably can't get a photo of everyone at a con but I think photographer's can captured the vibe of it all. Plus for masquerade winners, a chance to be listed with photos. as well as contestants too.

Cons can have behind the scenes photos - board meetings, setting up for the con , maybe a volunteer group photo from the end of the con, head of department photos, etc, If they do smaller public events, they can cover it.

Cons can pre-sell them , have them put together over the year and release them at their next con. You pick up your badge, and a copy of last year's yearbook at the same time.

My main reason is this a good way to contain a visual history of a convention. Think of it, if Otakon has done this since 1995, there'll be years of memories preserved in books.

Anyways, just a thought.

Deanna Director : Home Alone 2 was the first movie my now-fiancé Billy and I ever watched together, so it holds a special meaning for us. We love the film so much that, for his 40th birthday, we flew to Chicago to recreate the famous cannonball pool scene at the Four Seasons, shot for shot.
One day, we were joking about Kevin and his Talkboy being this perfect nostalgic duo, and the cosplay idea just happened naturally. I always wanted a Talkboy as a kid, but my parents refused to get me one! So this project was a form of “revenge” for me.

My dad was a huge antique toy and comic book collector, and he used to take me to Comic Con in Orlando, Florida, where I grew up. I was obsessed with classic ’90s Nickelodeon cartoons, Ren & Stimpy being a favorite. Every year, I stop by Bob Camp’s (the co-creator of Ren & Stimpy) table in Artist’s Alley to grab a new print.

The first time I ever dressed up was in 2014. I hired a fashion designer to help me create a couture, female version of the iconic Dumb & Dumber tuxedos. The Farrelly Brothers loved it so much they invited me to the Dumb & Dumber sequel premiere in Los Angeles, where I got to meet my hero, Jim Carrey.

Last year we went viral for our Ace Ventura “rhino butt” cosplay, but this year we really connected with people on a deeper, more emotional level, tapping into that sense of childhood wonder and nostalgia.

We’re deeply rooted in comedy and engineering, and we love playing in the intersection of fashion and pop culture. Our handmade satirical art pieces, from parody products to conceptual fashion objects, have been featured in galleries and covered widely online.

BILLY : The idea for our Home Alone 2 cosplay actually started from another project. We went to the Four Seasons in Chicago to do a cannonball in the same pool Kevin McCallister jumps into in the movie. We recreated the entire scene shot-for-shot for my 40th birthday. It became a tradition, every time we go on vacation, we remake that cannonball scene. It’s a fun creative challenge and a great way to capture memories we can rewatch later.

On the plane ride home from Chicago, Talkboy in hand, we started brainstorming ideas for New York Comic Con. Keeping the Home Alone theme going just made sense. Before we knew it, we were designing and building a giant Talkboy cosplay which I could puppeteer and mimic a real working Talkboy. I had one as a kid which is long gone, but Deanna surprised me with one for my 40th birthday. Home Alone 2 was also the very first movie we watched together when we met around Christmas, so this project has really come full circle.

I’m an engineer by trade, but I’ve been building things for as long as I can remember. I grew up on Nicktoons, Cartoon Network, Legos, and K’nex. I’ve always loved movies, and that naturally evolved into making my own for fun and building props. The Talkboy was the first thing I remember as a kid that made me feel like I was holding a real piece of movie magic. It wasn’t just a toy or an action figure, it was the prop. It looked exactly like the one from Home Alone 2.

At New York Comic Con, people went crazy for it. Once they realized what we were, they’d rush over for photos, and every time we pulled out the batteries or the cassette tape, the crowd would lose it all over again. It reminded me that nostalgia never fails. Everyone wants to relive that feeling of being a kid at Christmas. So many people told us they had a Talkboy or always wanted one, you could see their faces light up with those memories from 1992.

Our Home Alone projects have grown into their own little universe from our fake Home Alone Airbnb listing video, to all the cannonball remakes, and even recreating the airport chase scene. Our Instagram is full of them. We also mix comedy and fashion into what we do with pieces like our “Channel Egg Purse,” the “Leonard DiCaprio” hat, and other playful designs. It’s all about blending nostalgia, humor, and creativity and having fun doing it.
