Hidden within the Peruvian Amazon is a mountain range that rises above the rainforest. And now... it's protected. :herb:

The newly established Aguas Calientes Maquía Regional Conservation Area safeguards more than 242,000 acres (98,162 hectares) of rainforest, wetlands, and forested mountains in Loreto, Peru. The protected area includes part of the Ojo de Contaya mountain range, an isolated extension of the Sierra del Divisor system that helps create an extraordinary landscape of habitats for wildlife.

The landscape is home to threatened species like the Peruvian Red Uakari and Peruvian Spider Monkey, while also protecting natural water sources and strengthening a critical conservation corridor that connects protected areas across Peru and Brazil.

Aguas Calientes Maquía takes its name from the region's geothermal hot springs, a rare feature in the lowland Amazon. Nearly 60% of the protected area also overlaps territories of Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact (PIACI), helping safeguard both biological and cultural diversity.

More than a decade in the making, this achievement was led by the regional government of Loreto with technical support from our partner and the dedication of local communities and Indigenous organizations working to protect this remarkable landscape.
