Welcome to Friday FAQs, where we answer the most commonly asked questions about child support. Have a question you haven't seen covered? Send us a message!

Today's question:

I am getting child support payments right now because they are being garnished and sent to me automatically. My ex is about to retire and I am worried that I won’t get anymore payments once the wage garnishment stops. What should I do?

Answer:

If your ex is old enough to collect social security, those payments can be garnished, just like a wage garnishment. If you are working with a company like Supportkids, or have a family attorney, they can help you with the transition between a wage garnishment and social security garnishment. Otherwise, we recommend you contact the child support enforcement agency in your state and let them know that the change is coming. We also recommend following up with them once the retirement has taken place to make sure everything is in order.

All information and advice provided by Friday FAQs is general. For specific information about your case, contact an attorney or other child support professional.
