Beethoven’s musical output is vast and is generally divided into three creative periods. Among his most famous compositions are:

Symphonies: Notable examples include the Third Symphony (Eroica), the Fifth Symphony and the Ninth Symphony (Choral), famous for featuring the movement ‘Ode to Joy’.
Piano Music: This includes the Moonlight Sonata, the Pathétique Sonata, the Hammerklavier Sonata and the short piece Für Elise.
Opera and Vocal Music: His only opera, Fidelio, and the Missa solemnis.
Chamber Music: The string quartets, particularly those from his late period such as the Große Fuge.
His 722 compositions remain among the most performed and studied in the world.
