😭🎉 Welcome home, Maya!

5 days lost in 105° temps after a freak accident and sweet Maya is home safe!

While she was out on the golf course with dad, her leash got tangled up in the golf bag after something spooked her and she bolted… dragging it behind her at full speed. Moments later, her *leather* collar tore off and the rest was history.

She was seen briefly the next day, but then had gone into some seriously good hiding!

Her family was willing to do whatever it took to get her back and every suggestion we gave them, they put into action immediately.

Big buckets of ice water placed along the course with food and scent items, flyers up, golf course and the bordering state park notified. Early morning and late night scouting… quietly trying to spot her.

Finally on Wednesday morning, during a 4:30am stakeout, a mini grill was brought out to the course to get the area smelling extra tasty to lure her.

They were just about to call it when Dad called the family friend who was with the grill to tell her he was heading that way. While she quietly spoke on the phone to him, Maya heard her and started to poke her head out of the woods. 🥹

This is something we teach people often – yelling for your dog/pursuing your dog with your voice, versus just talking normally out loud allows the dog to start to process who they’re hearing versus perceiving it as a threat and running away. ✔️

Armed with all the knowledge about calming signals and how to safely lure her, Maya’s godmother was able to get her to come to her. Mom and Dad arrived shortly after approaching with the same know-how and Maya was able to be caught and taken to the car.🥹

Aside from being dehydrated and some burns on her paws, her vet gave her a clean bill of health.👏

Persistence pays off and Maya is so lucky to be home in her bed with an amazing family who loves her.

Maya is 3 yr old, female, brindle Boxer who went missing in a freak accident on Friday at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course. Maya was wearing her collar and ON LEASH when her leash got tangled around her dad’s golf bag when something spooked her. She got up trying to run from it and her leather collar snapped.

She bolted in fear and has only been seen once in the area since.

We often refrain from posting to social when we know the area a dog is in and can zero in on them. But it’s day 3 with no sightings, so now we need your help.

We need everyone to be on the lookout. Maya is about 50 pounds, she is already very nervous and will not be able to be approached.

It is VITAL that you do NOT CHASE her or call out to her. Please help us get the word out right away!
