Texas property taxes are back in the spotlight 👀 Our Lt. Governor says he’s pushing another tax cut next legislative session. This year we saw the homestead exemption jump from $100K → $140K, and now the proposal is to raise it again to $180K and lower the senior exemption age from 65 → 55.
Good news… but here’s the truth: none of this helps first-time home buyers actually get into their first home.
So here’s my idea 👉 If you’re buying your first home under a certain price point, you should get a 1-year property tax abatement.
Example: On a $400,000 home, that’s roughly $8,000 saved in year one. REAL breathing room. Real help.
Texas gives massive tax breaks to giant companies (hey, Tesla 👋)… but homeownership drives the economy too. You’d still have to qualify based on full taxes — but that first year with no property tax could keep people from drowning on day one.
What do you think? Would a one-year tax break help first-time buyers finally get in the door? Drop your thoughts below 👇
Buying your first home in Austin? 🏡 Here are the 3 things we wish every first-time homebuyer knew before starting their search:
1️⃣ Don’t think in 30-year terms.
Most buyers stay in a home 5–7 years, not 30 — thinking in terms of 30 years can be overwhelming. Think: will I be happy in this home for 5-7 years?
2️⃣ Stop searching for the “perfect” home.
Paint, fixtures, landscaping, cabinets — all changeable. But you can’t move a house.
Prioritize location, school district, commute, and long-term value first. The rest can be customized over time.
3️⃣ Don’t max out your budget.
If you buy at the very top of your price range, you leave no room for improvements, updates, or unexpected expenses. Give yourself financial breathing room — your future self will thank you.
If you’re a first-time buyer in Austin and want a strategy that actually fits your life, we’ve got you. 💛
New construction doesn’t always mean perfect. 👀
I’m sharing a real-world story every buyer should hear before move-in day. Thinking about skipping the inspection? Watch this first.
