There are two types of dental plans:
1. A medical plan that includes dental benefits is convenient but with limited coverage options
2. A stand alone dental insurance plan which offers more flexibility and more coverage options.
Below are the most common networks available for dental insurance:
Dental Preferred Provider Organization (DPPO) - you have a network of providers to choose from however, seeing a dentist out of network will cost you more and typically have a deductible and coinsurance.
Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO) - this is a more affordable dental plan because you are required to choose a primary care dentist from the network. These plans typically do not provide coverage if you choose to see a dentist outside the network.
Dental Indemnity - It is often referred to as a “traditional" dental plan or a “fee-for-service.” You don’t need to choose a primary care dentist and you may not need referrals to see a specialist. This plan usually has an annual deductible and coinsurance. You’ll pay for services out of pocket until you meet the deductible.
Dental Exclusive Provider Organization (DEPO) - with this plan you must see a dentist that is in network to be covered. Out of network coverage is not covered.
Dental Point of Service (DPOS) - This plan combines aspects of both the DHMOs and DPPOs. Costs are lower if stay in network and you are required to choose a primary care dentist who will provide any needed referrals to specialists who are either in or out of network.

Gold plan - The insurance company pays 80% and you are responsible for 20%. This gives you a high monthly premium with a low deductible.
Platinum plan - The insurance company pays 90% and you are responsible for 10%. This gives you a high monthly premium and the lowest deductible.
