In honor of Black History Month, a little history lesson from my brokerage on the Fair Housing Act. Finally passed in 1968, after decades of struggle, and only a week after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., the Fair Housing Act has gone a long way to alleviate discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, s*x, (and as amended) handicap and family status.

But there is still a long way to go. According to The National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA), there were 28,712 complaints filed in 2020. According to the NFHA, "millions of families and individuals continue to experience unlawful acts of housing discrimination, most of which go unreported."

It takes every single one of us to end discrimination. We all have a part to play, especially real estate agents, as we have historically played a disproportionate role in perpetuating racial segregation and housing discrimination.

I'm proud that my brokerage Realty Austin is not only fully committed to the principles of the Fair Housing Act, but takes that commitment farther, by donating to organizations working to make housing in Austin more affordable for all — including Foundation Communities, Habitat for Humanity, and Community First Village.
