Contingencies can get a bad reputation for delaying, and even canceling, home sales. They’re really a form of protection for a buyer or seller to prevent an unwanted outcome. For example, a buyer with an existing home might ask for a contingency to sell that home before closing on a new one. This protects them from taking on two mortgages if their current home sale falls through. It’s important to know which contingencies you need and which you can let go of if negotiations become difficult. Work with a real estate agent you trust to advise your best interests in this situation.
