What a major development for the Austin skyline! Austin is joining a short list of US cities with 2 or more 1,000 footers, the others being: NYC, Chicago, LA, and now Austin.
A multifamily residential building planned for the 0.8-acre property at 410 East Fifth Street, now known as Wilson Tower, is set to rise 80 floors with a total height of 1,035 feet, making it 13 feet taller than the Waterline supertall (and 24th tallest in the USA -- and tallest building in the US outside NYC, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. For perspective, this one will be only 8' shorter than the iconic Chrysler Building.
The site plan was filed back in May. The 450-unit apartment building is set to break ground in summer of 2023.
Unfortunately, the tower is 6 feet shorter than the Waldorf under construction in Miami. We want those bragging rights! But then again, we'll be one of four cities with 2 or more 1,000 footers ... take that Miami. With that being said, we're pretty excited about the 100 story Miami Waldorf which recently broke ground. It looks pretty cool (swipe right for renderings).

The 98 Red River supertall has broken ground and we cannot be more excited. Supertall skyscrapers are defined as those that rise over 984 feet in heigh. Since the construction of the Chrysler Building, the world’s first supertall, around 30 have been built in North America -- mostly in NYC. Austin's will top out at 1,022 feet (73 floors), 22 feet shorter than the iconic Chrysler; it'll be the tallest building in Texas.
98 Red River's podium conforms to the bend of Waller Creek with a gentle curve of the western elevation and wraps a parking structure with hotel space. Deep balconies are divided up by playful partitions, animating the facade. Above, office space and hotel amenities lift the tower from the podium, where exterior gardens celebrate the incredible views from the building. Accommodating the project’s office and residential space, the tower’s programs are bifurcated with indoor/outdoor residential amenities that are playful and porous in form and bring elements of the creek up into the tower. The mixed-use nature of the project lends itself to the stacked and striated design that rises up the tower as it leans away from the water. This movement is enhanced by the primarily horizontal façade expression, which is modulated by a series of vertical elements.
Here is to a new era in Austin!
