What Is a Kitchen Bump Out?
Kitchen bump outs are extensions of the home that are meant to increase the size of the kitchen enough to add a few features or slightly update the layout.
Kitchen Bump Outs vs. Full Additions
One obvious solution is to build an addition. But full-size additions often include more area and more rooms than are needed. Plus, full-size additions are often so expensive that they easily reach into the six figures for even modestly sized homes.
Kitchen Bump Out: Pros and Cons
PROS
1. Less expensive to build than a full addition
2. Adds space only to the area where you need it: the kitchen
3. Good choice if property size or nearby easements prevent building a full-size addition
4. In some cases, may not require additional heating or cooling
5. If more heater or cooling are required, it is simple to add with permanent heaters or window unit ACs
CONS
1. Requires permitting
2. Requires a foundation
3. Usually requires additional work done in the existing kitchen space to match the new bumped out space
4. Less economical than a full addition on a dollar per square foot basis
5. Can be difficult to aesthetically blend with the rest of the house exterior
