Back in January, we shared about the Little v. Hecox and West Virginia v. B.P.J. Supreme Court cases as oral arguments began. Both of these cases challenge state laws that ban transgender girls from playing school sports consistent with their gender identity. The Supreme Court is deciding if these bans violate the Equal Protection Clause and Title IX. Today, Transgender advocates and allies are awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court, expected to come this month or in June.
What the Court decides in HECOX and BPJ could set a national precedent, either limiting or reinforcing the power of states to target trans people. As Social Workers, we know how important the power of our voices is. Trans youth continue to face countless policy attacks, like these cases, that threaten to limit their ability to participate in community life. It's our responsibility as Social Workers to defend human dignity and practice affirming, evidence-based care. It's our responsibility to speak up for the young people being harmed by these policies. Our voices and visibility signal to trans youth that they are not alone, and demonstrate to the public that protecting their rights is a professional imperative and a matter of justice. Trans people belong. Our voices matter. Fight for the “T” in Team.
