Getting ready for class: For parents of young dancers: Parents as you get ready for dance talk to your young ones about listening to the teacher, staying in place and express your excitement about seeing what they learn! When you arrive at the studio it's best to drop off and allow the teacher to take over as the "in charge adult". Even if you stay in the lobby or watch through an observation window it is best not to hover so that the child does not have such a hard time separating. Within a few weeks, this should get easier and easier.
Do not coach from the door. You've done the hard work to choose a quality school, with a strong curriculum and experienced/gifted teachers. Now, you must trust the instructor. Dance Instructors have a very specific plan for how the training will occur. The details are added as building blocks and may not appear evident for a while because of coordination, balance, and attention span. If you are yelling out corrections from the doorway you are distracting the students and confusing them as to whom they should be listening to.
Lastly- Try to not compare your child to other dancers. Everyone learns at a different pace, has different natural abilities and IT'S OKAY! Some of the most difficult 3-5 year olds turn out to be the most amazing Senior Company dancers. Be patient.
After class- celebrate by letting them show you or even "teach" you what they did in class. Compliment successes that you see from week to week.
