We’re proud to highlight Harrisburg Family Health Care, and their dedicated volunteer nurse, Ann Winter, RN, CCM.

Ann brings more than 40 years of nursing experience across Augusta’s leading hospitals, including MCG, Doctor’s Hospital, University Hospital, and Walton Rehabilitation Hospital. Her career has spanned both direct patient care and leadership roles, always centered on compassion and service.

After retiring in 2021, Ann returned to a limited volunteer nursing role—continuing to serve her community because, as she says, “once a nurse, always a nurse.”

We’re grateful for partners like Harrisburg Family Health Care and individuals like Ann who help strengthen our community.

The Medical College of Georgia Literacy Initiative, a student group on AU’s campus, continues to make a meaningful impact through its ongoing partnership with the Harris Literacy Center and the HUB for Community Innovation. Through community programming, special events, and health awareness efforts, MCG students help bridge the connection between health literacy and lifelong literacy development. Their dedication reflects a shared belief that literacy — in all forms — is essential to helping individuals, families, and communities live healthy, informed, and thriving lives.

At our recent Star Wars community event, the group further supported families and learners through their “Moving Out of the Darkness Into Positivity” activities, which embraced poetry, self-expression, encouragement, and fun. Their creativity and compassion helped create a welcoming space where community members could connect, reflect, and celebrate together.

When local food systems thrive, communities do too.

Augusta Locally Grown is making that happen. Connecting farmers to families, expanding access to fresh produce, and investing in education that helps Augusta eat healthier, together.

This month, the Harris Literacy Center’s poem of the Month is May in Augusta!

This short poem is written as a triolet, a form that uses repetition to create rhythm and reflection. Lines return like a refrain, mirroring the slow, steady feel of May in Augusta—where magnolias bloom, the river glints, and time seems to linger just a little longer. 🌸
