Hell yeah! I still get mix some real talent still!

Ran across a new and interesting microphone application. While setting up for the Julliard in Aiken concert at the Fort Gordon Dinner Theater. This was the first time I've run into solo micing an acoustic violin. my solution was to place three over-head choral mics straight down, in a in-line 5 foot wide array. This worked really well even with floor monitor wedges in the zone. However, two things I didn't consider, the animation of the artists (he was quite the mover!) and pizzicato. On several occasions, he played the violin like a guitar, which moved the instrument completely out of range of the over-head mics! Of course the easy fix would be to add a couple of choir mics in front of the artist. So, remember to surround your artist when you have an unusual situation! That way, no matter what they do, you got them covered.
This all would have been discovered with a proper sound check! They seem to be getting harder to have these days!!!
